Parents and carers across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being encouraged to access free infant feeding support through local family hubs as part of World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August).
Breastfeeding can provide health benefits for both babies and mothers, and timely support can help families overcome challenges and continue feeding in the way that works best for them.
Parents who are breastfeeding, combination feeding, expressing milk or simply looking for advice, can get support through Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council’s family hubs, in partnership with Dorset Breastfeeding Network.
Dorset Breastfeeding Network deliver free support groups in family hubs across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. Run by trained peer supporters, these sessions provide practical advice, reassurance and opportunities for families to connect with others in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Supporting families with infant feeding is a key part of BCP Council's Best Start in Life programme.
Breastfeeding is one of the many ways parents can support their baby's health and development, and getting support when needed can help families achieve their feeding goals.
Ashley Gallimore, Dorset Breastfeeding Network Service Manager, said:
"Getting the right support at the right time can make a real difference to a family's breastfeeding journey. Many parents simply need reassurance, practical advice or someone to talk things through with.
“It’s important to recognise our groups will help all families, no matter how they choose to feed their baby.
"Our support groups provide a safe and welcoming space where families can ask questions, build confidence and access information.
"Whether someone is just starting their feeding journey or experiencing challenges later on, we encourage them to reach out and access support. Don't face these challenges alone.
"World Breastfeeding Week is a great opportunity to remind families that help is available whenever they need it and that every child deserves the best start in life."
Families can come to a support group on a day and location that suits them in any family hub in the area.
Councillor David Brown, BCP Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said:
"Becoming a parent can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. No parent should feel they have to manage feeding challenges on their own.
"We want families to know that support is available and that asking for help is a positive step. Through our support groups in our family hubs, parents can access trusted advice, practical support and opportunities to connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges.”
